Management Approach

Management Approach

The strategic management of sustainability is shared among numerous corporate groups: EHS&S, Human Resources, Corporate Relations, Investor Relations and Legal, among others.

Partnering

Because Agrium is the only publicly traded company that is integrated from mining the raw materials for fertilizer production through to selling to growers, we are in the enviable position of identifying and addressing sustainability issues in a holistic manner.

We work with regulators and industry experts to extract raw materials in a manner that will minimize long-term environmental impacts and enable reclamation of the land. In our production processes, we work to maximize energy efficiency and reduce emissions. We work with customers, carriers and government to continually improve the safety and the effectiveness of our distribution system. Finally, we work with researchers, industry associations, and growers to ensure our products are applied using best management practices to improve performance.

We also review the environmental and safety performance of our suppliers and contractors, and employ programs to help them improve performance in these areas.

Here are some of the groups we collaborate with:

The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) – represents the fertilizer industry in Washington D.C. Their mission is to represent, promote and protect the fertilizer industry. TFI conducts research, shares knowledge and helps the industry speak to society as a single voice about the benefits and impacts of fertilizer.

The Canadian Fertilizer Institute (CFI) – is the Canadian counterpart of the TFI. Canada plays a substantial role in world fertilizer markets. It supplies approximately 12% of the world's fertilizer materials and is the world's largest exporters of potash and elemental sulphur. It is estimated that the Canadian fertilizer industry contributes over $7 billion annually to the Canadian economy.

International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) The International Plant Nutrition Institute is a not-for-profit, science-based organization with a focus on agronomic education and research support worldwide. In 2007, the IPNI established programs in China, India, Southeast Asia, Northern Latin America, Brazil, Latin America-Southern Cone, the United States, and Canada, plus a new presence in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Many of their members reside outside of North America.

We also work with the International Fertilizer Association; Crop Life; the Agricultural Retailers Association and other groups such as non-profit organizations (Progressive Agriculture Foundation; Ducks Unlimited; United Way; Millennium Promise); and with farming groups (4H; Grain Growers of Canada) among others.
